Cafe Sonore met Fathom, onderwater soundscapes van Douglas Quinj

De Café Sonore uitzending van 17 oktober is hoofdzakelijk gewijd aan Fathom, een recente vinyl release van de Amerikaanse componist, sounddesigner en geluidenvorser Douglas Quin. Fathom is een prachtig vormgegeven plaat van het exclusieve LP label Taiga records.
Verder hoor je in deze Cafe Sonore muziek van de recente cd Lontano – Hommage to Giascinto Scelsi. Dit is een project van muziekcurator Stefano Tedesco, die op basis van het muzikale erfgoed van Scelsi 13 hedendaagse geluidscomponisten uitnodigde om een werk te maken. En er is aandacht voor de recente CD Canto Ostinato van het Rondane kwartet.

Douglas Quin is al jaren bekend en beroemd als een van de meest bijzondere soundscape kunstenaars. De afgelopen 20 jaar bereisde hij de hele  wereld, van de Afrikaanse savanne tot het amazone regenwoud en van de Noordpool tot de Zuidpool. Met name zijn ongeëvenaarde opnames van geluidswerelden op de meest afgelegen oorden van onze aardbol zijn adembenemend. Douglas Quin werkt voor diverse natuur instituten zoals het Smithsonian Institution, het American Museum of Natural History en de Poolse wetenschapacademie. Ook is hij betrokken bij het herstelplan voor de bedreigde Kagu vogel, het Kagu Recovery Plan and Conservation Research van New Caledonia.
Quin verzorgde  pas geleden het geluidsdesign voor de recente film van Werner Herzog, Encounters At the End of the World. Momenteel werkt Quin aan een nieuw werk voor het Kronos Kwartet waarbij soundscapes en de K-bow, een nieuw instrument van Keith McMillen gebruikt gaan worden.

Op de LP Fathom, uitgebracht in een oplage van 1000 stuks en met speciale tekeningen en design van  Mitchell Dost en Loaf Nest en een speciale tekst van Rene van Peer,  zijn opnames bij elkaar gebracht, die Quin over de afgelopen 15 jaar gemaakt heeft op de noord- en zuid-pool. Hoewel de geluiden van deze onherbergzame streken reëel en honderd procent organisch zijn, denk maar aan. zeeleeuwen, orka’s, pinguïns en krakend ijs, heb je als luisteraar toch het idee buitenstaander te zijn. En Fathom is daarmee een auditieve reis naar de welhaast buitenaardse geluidswereld van onze aardpolen. De vier tracks hebben als titel de exacte locatie bepaling van de opnames uitgedrukt in lengte en breedte graad.

“The concept of the ‘alien’ is ingrained in our mindset. It governs our perception of the world around us, and must be based on bare necessity – the necessity to preserve one’s being. In order to achieve that, knowledge of what does (and what does not) agree to the human physical and mental well-being is essential. This constitutes a vital divide. On this side you live, across it chances are that you die.
Ultimately that is the point of any ideology sanctioning alteration of our environment to make it suitable for human habitation and use. In the course of our existence on this planet we  have developed ever more sophisticated tools to ensure the continuation of that existence. We like to think of our planet as ideally suited to support human life. It is not. Even in so-called temperate climates weather conditions would be part of the year life-threatening, if we didn’t have the protection of clothing, shelter, and heating.
From inside the cocoons that we have spun around ourselves, we can effortlessly perpetuate the myth of being in control of the world, the biblical myth of dominion. In the snug comfort of our homes we can watch films portraying extreme conditions on our planet, understand the lethal quality of what we see, and still not grasp the fragility of our position vis-à-vis this world.
The environments captured in sound by Doug Quin, and presented on this album, are situated in areas at the extremes of the globe – they are not beneficial to human life. Compared to visual representations, however realistic those may be, they work on a different level. The recordings cut right through the armour of armchair content (reinforcing the notion that what we hear is more evocative than what we see). They make instantly clear that what you are listening to is an alien world. A world that is conjured up in staggering and disturbing detail before your very ears.
This detail, combined with the spatial quality and the natural flow of the sonic occurrences, suggests that the recordings were not fabricated. You’ll readily accept the environments as real, and as part of this world – but ostensibly not of our world. Although some of the sounds are familiar, the overall impression is one of foreignness, of surroundings that do not agree with our being. We don’t feel at home there. And realize that we never will. These are places on our planet in which we are, and will always be, outsiders.
With these recordings Quin allows you to be a visitor there. In a way this is nothing short of miraculous – to be able to roam around such spaces; to feel at the same time associated with them and dissociated from them. To be sure, the detailed sonic imagery and the sensation of being an alien to  these places, filled me with an uneasy awe. It shook and up-ended my precious comfort. Put my world in a new light.”
